Batch Numbers and Traceability in Research Supply

2026-10-04 · 3 min read

How batch numbers connect a vial to its analytical documentation and why recording them belongs in every experimental protocol.

One number, one history

A batch (lot) number identifies material produced and tested together. It is the key that links the vial on the bench to its certificate of analysis and, through the supplier, to production records.

Good practice in the lab

Record the product name, batch number, date received and storage conditions in the experiment log. If results are unexpected, this makes it possible to check whether a batch change coincides with the change in results.

When reordering, note that a new order may come from a different batch with its own certificate.
